Bullseye BBQ Sauce
This was our very first "store bought" BBQ sauce we featured on our website. Given that Bull's Eye Barbecue Sauce manufactured by Kraft foods is one of the most famous of the store bought sauces, it was a great place to start.
Now after searching the web high and low, I've captured several possible recipes to mimic the great bullseye bbq sauce you can get at nearly any grocery store.
Since there are several different recipes floating around that "supposedly" are that of Bull's Eye Barbecue Sauce, I've taken what looks to be the four best ones I could find with a few comments about each one. So far, I have not had a chance myself to make any of these to try and see how close they are to the bullseye original recipe.
Secret Recipe #1 for Bullseye BBQ Sauce:
After searching the web, here's a Bull's Eye barbecue sauce clone recipe that I found which said it was described by Paul Kirk in The BBQer Magazine (Spring 2004) as his tweaked version of the Top Secret Recipes clone recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1 to 2 cups water or stock
- 3/4 cup light or dark corn syrup
- 2/3 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 cup tomato paste
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons molasses
- 1-1/4 to 2 teaspoons liquid smoke
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 to 1 teaspoon granulated onion
- 1/4 to 1 teaspoon fine grind black pepper
- 1/4 to 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/8 to 2 teaspoons paprika
- 1/8 to 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
- Dash to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
Directions: Combine all ingredients in saucepan over medium high heat, wisk until smooth. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick.

Secret Recipe #3 for Bullseye BBQ Sauce:
This recipe also includes directions for proper bottling of the sauce once it is cooked so you don't have to refrigerate it after making a big batch. According to the person that posted this recipe: "This recipe calls for some special ingredients and you may pay a bit more in the beginning than what comes in a bottle, but when you taste the difference or give a jar of your own BBQ Sauce that tastes better than what you can buy you will agree is is definitely worth it!"
Ingredients:
- 3 3/4 cup water
- 2 large cans (24 oz) tomato paste
- 2 1/2 cups brown sugar
- 1 3/4 cup malt vinegar (has to be malt...no other tastes quite right)
- 1 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/4 cup liquid smoke
- 1 Tablespoon pepper
- 1 Tablespoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon Vidalia French Onion seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Directions:

- Place hot lids and seals onto jars and place in hot water bath for 20 minutes or use pressure canner (use 10 lbs. pressure) for 60 minutes for pints or 70 minutes for quarts.

Secret Recipe #5 for Bullseye BBQ Sauce: (NOT A GOOD VERSION THAT IS FLOATING AROUND!)
If you go searching around the web, you'll find this very recipe posted on a number of websites. Therefore, I thought I'd post it here that this is NOT a good version of the recipe at all. I found a review from someone on this one that said it tastes nothing like Bulls Eye. They said it was a mild tomato-based sauce and not nearly as good as Bull's Eye.
Ingredients:- 1/2 cup minced onions
- 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 cup water
- 1 1/4 cups ketchup
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 dash Tabasco sauce
Directions: Combine ingredients in a saucepan; cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
